The 2012 Honda Civic retains many of the qualities beloved by previous generations. The latest Civic is fuel-efficient, affordable, and undoubtedly reliable. But while some generations have offered a bit of sportiness, the new model is more inclined to provide comfort for all.
Handling and steering in the new Civic has been relaxed a bit. Honda has also softened the Civic’s four-wheel independent suspension in an effort to make the ride more comfortable, albeit somewhat less responsive. Although the new Civic is still nimble, Honda has reserved sportiness for the Civic Si model, which boasts loads of performance-tuned features.
Under the hood is the same 1.8-liter, iV-TEC four-cylinder mated to a five-speed automatic found in the previous Civic. This unit produces 140 horsepower, which makes it on par with the competition. The EPA rates the Civic at 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, which is extremely competitive in the compact segment.
Inside, Honda carries over its two-layer dash that gives the car a distinctively youthful look. As with any Honda, the Civic’s ergonomics is excellent. Audio and climate control knobs are big and easy to use and everything is placed where you expect it to be.
The Civic, excluding the Si model, may lack sportiness, but it makes up for this deficiency in overall comfort. Honda also offers an unprecedented selection a models and configurations, making it easy to find right Civic for just about any buyer.
