Vogue Magazine Features Ashley Fiolek in Their April 2012 Issue

12_afiolek
In what can be viewed as a timely boost to the sport of Women's Motocross, Team Honda's Ashley Fiolek is the focus of a feature article in the April 2012 issue of Vogue magazine. Vogue magazine focuses on the world of entertainment and fashion with 12 issues published each year, and over 1.2 million copies in circulation monthly. The four-page feature gives an inside look at how Fiolek has not only overcome her disability in a high-speed sport that puts a premium on the sense of hearing, but also being a female who has earned numerous accolades on and off the track in a male-dominated sport.

Fiolek, a three-time Women's Motocross Champion and two-time X-Games gold medalist, made history by becoming the first female to sign a contract with the American Honda Racing factory team in 2009. In addition to her impressive run of race wins, she has also continued to help bring attention to women's motocross and has become a positive role model for young girls everywhere.

Top Young Scholars Prepare for Nation's Only Academic Competition Among Historically Black Colleges and Universities

250 Students from 48 of the Nation's HBCUs Set to Compete for Grants and Glory in the 2012 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge

Hcasc_photo
Across the nation, students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are making final preparations to vie for grants and glory at the nation's only HBCU academic competition – at the 2012 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) (www.hcasc.com). The two-day competition, scheduled to take place April 1 - April 2 in Torrance, CA, will test students' knowledge of history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social science, and popular culture. The competition will give students the opportunity to win a share of the more than $300,000 in institutional grants awarded annually by Honda, and to battle for bragging rights as the nation's top academic HBCU.

The 250 HCASC student competitors from 48 HBCUs, or "Great 48," heading to Torrance to compete in the 2012 games, hail from HBCUs located in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, South Carolina, Delaware, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, New York, Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Oklahoma, Virginia, Texas, West Virginia, and Washington DC. The competitors will be split into eight divisions and will compete in a modified round-robin format. The top two teams from each division will advance to the "Sweet 16" and will compete in a single elimination playoff.  The final two teams that emerge from the playoffs will battle for the title of National Champions and the grand prize of $50,000.

The 23rd annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge will take place this year at the corporate headquarters of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., in Torrance, CA. Moving from its previous location in Orlando, FL, this will be the first time the event is held in the Los Angeles area on Honda's campus. Honda, the event's sole corporate sponsor, hopes to introduce students to the many career opportunities available in the automotive industry.

Last year's National Champions, Florida A&M University, beat second place finisher Oakwood University and took home $50,000 in grant money for their school after answering the following question correctly:

His 2007 book, Avoid Boring People, looks back on his entire life, not just the two years in which he found fame in the 1950's, which he already chronicled in The Double Helix.  For 10 additional points -- who is this U.S. geneticist and physicist who co-discovered the molecular structure of DNA?

Final Answer: James D. Watson

Florida A&M University holds the most HCASC National Championships, has participated 22 out of the 23 years of the competition and has taken home more than $475,000 in grant money for their university. They will be back again this year to defend their title.

HCASC is one of Honda's largest and longest running philanthropic initiatives in the United States.  Throughout its 22-year tenure, the program has touched more than 50,000 students and awarded more than $6 million in grants.  In addition to providing students a venue for friendly competition, the program encourages relationship building, intellectual excellence, and the development of values that define good character.

Quotes:

Quote from Florida A&M University Team Captain
"When you get the right group together you overcome all adversity.  Everybody on the team has different personalities and experiences which creates a ying/yang with four components that compliment each other with perfect balance."

Trenton J. Johnson, captain, Florida A&M University, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team - 2011 National Champions

Quote from Oakwood University Team Captain
"The most exciting part of the competition was watching the other teams win.  You make friends instantly so you're really cheering your friends on.  It's a competitive sport with no hard feelings."

Marcus Cooper, captain, Oakwood University, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team - 2011 Runner-Up

Quote from Honda Executive
"In 1989, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge was created to highlight the great minds and talent present at our nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  Today, 23 years later, we at Honda are proud to still be a part of HCASC as it continues to exemplify HBCUs' academic excellence, enrich our nation's youth, and invest in one of the country's largest pipelines for professional, artistic, and academic talent. We hope that by hosting the students on the campus of our national headquarters we can expose and hopefully inspire them to consider a career in the automotive industry. "

Steve Morikawa, assistant vice president, Corporate Community Relations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas Keys Netted by NHL Star George Parros

2012_civic_natural_gas_01

Honda presented the keys to a 2012 Civic Natural Gas to Anaheim Ducks NHL star George Parros at the American Honda campus yesterday in Torrance, Calif. Under an agreement with American Honda, Parros will drive the Civic Natural Gas to create awareness of the vehicle amongst his Ducks teammates and fans.

Awarded the 2012 Green Car of the Year®, the  Civic Natural Gas is the only OEM-built, CNG-powered passenger car for sale in the U.S. Now available at 197 dealers in 36 states, the 2012 Civic Natural Gas is powered by the cleanest internal-combustion engine certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Tier-II, Bin-2 and ILEV certification as of August 2010). The Civic Natural Gas currently qualifies for a state-issued decal allowing single-occupant access to High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) "carpool" lanes in California and several other states.

"George is an ideal representative for the Honda Civic Natural Gas vehicle and embodies many of Honda's core attributes; he has a strong sense for environmental issues, is value driven, and is active in his community," explained Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda. "To help George with his daily commute to the Honda Center, he will be replacing his previous generation natural gas powered Honda Civic with the all-new 2012 model, featuring enhanced exterior and interior styling, improved fuel economy and a refueling price typically 30 percent less than gasoline."

Parros, 32, is in his sixth season with the Anaheim Ducks (seventh in the NHL), having played on the Stanley Cup-winning 2007 team. The popular right wing (#16) and Princeton grad joined the NHL in 2005, and is well recognized by hockey fans thanks to his 6-foot 5-inch, 228-pound frame and unique mustache.

This is the second natural gas powered Civic Parros has received from Honda, having begun his first stint in October 2010. Parros is also the second Anaheim Duck player to drive one of Honda's alternative fuel vehicles. The first was former Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer, who became an FCX Clarity fuel-cell electric vehicle customer in January 2010.

We absolutely love hearing from our customers!

"We had 4 kids (ages 7mths-8 yrs) and needed to buy an Odyssey quickly as possible. Chris did a fantastic job getting us through the system and we were out of there in about 2 hours, not an easy task with poor credit like we have! Everything from start to finish went smoothly and easy. The whole staff was wonderful especially considering I had 3 kids running around their showroom playing with cars. This is a dealership who cares about their customers and we would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a new or used Honda. Great work!!" - hojo

"Service was prompt, and Jon, the salesman, was very knowledgable and professional. He answered all of my questions; and went to the manual for answers to what he didn't know. Roberto was likewise very friendly and honest in hs dealings. The dealership honored th Internet price and lowered that price a little. The overall experience was pleasant and much different from the hughy negative experiences that I have had in years past with high pressure, dishonest salesmen." - sleh45cc

"Upon my arrival to the dealership, which was beautiful inside and out, I was immediately greeted with a smile by a very nice salesman, Andy. I let him know which cars I had been considering, and he walked me around the lot to take a look at some of my options. Once we went inside to talk details, Jack Carney, the General Manager, came over and personally introduced himself, welcomed me to the dealership, and made me feel very at ease about my big purchase. All of the employees were very informative, knowledgable and respectful. I could tell that they had my best interest at heart. I was very impressed with the personal attention I received from Mr. Carney. He was just wonderful and made the overall experience very special for me. After all the paperwork was signed, I was handed the keys and walked outside to check out my brand new, squeeky clean Red 2012 Honda Accord LX Coupe! It was a great day, and I could not have been more satisfied with Russell & Smith Honda and the amazing customer service they provided." - Caroline H.
